๐Ÿ—ฝ New York opted in on May 8, 2026. Pennsylvania is next. New Jersey is the last tri-state holdout. Deadline: January 1, 2027.
Urgent: NJ Action Needed

New Jersey kids
can't wait any longer.

A permanent $1,700 federal tax credit for scholarship donations is ready for New Jersey โ€” covering tutoring, books, and academic support for public school families. It costs our state nothing. Governor Sherrill just needs to say yes.

The Tri-State Reality

NJ is surrounded โ€” and falling behind

NJ residents will donate to scholarship organizations and claim the $1,700 federal tax credit regardless of whether NJ opts in. Without opt-in, every dollar of that flows to students in other states.

New Jersey is not on this thermometer yet.
Governor Sherrill's decision puts NJ students at the bottom while neighbors rise.
๐Ÿ—ฝ New York issued intent to opt in โ€” May 8, 2026

Status current as of May 2026. NJ is the only tri-state holdout.

๐Ÿ—ฝ
New York
โœ… Issued intent to opt in โ€” May 8, 2026
Governor Hochul issued a formal intent to opt in, becoming the second Democratic governor in the country to move forward โ€” calling it a win for NY families across all income levels. Early action gives NY scholarship organizations time to gear up and be ready for January 1, 2027.
๐ŸŒฟ
New Jersey
โŒ Not yet opted in
Governor Sherrill has not acted. Every day of delay matters โ€” not just because scholarship dollars flow elsewhere, but because Scholarship Granting Organizations need time to form, certify, and be ready to award funds on January 1, 2027. The sooner NJ opts in, the more students we can actually help.
๐Ÿ””
Pennsylvania
โณ Decision pending
Governor Shapiro faces mounting bipartisan pressure to follow New York. When PA acts, NJ will be the lone regional holdout โ€” a position no governor should be comfortable with.
What the EFTC Does

Not just private schools.
Every NJ kid.

Our campaign is focused on the piece of this program that gets lost in the political debate: tutoring, books, and academic support for public school students who want to advance โ€” without switching schools.

๐Ÿ“š
Levels the playing field
Wealthy families have always been able to hire tutors and buy extra books. This gives every NJ family the same access โ€” regardless of zip code.
๐Ÿซ
Public school students stay put
No school switching required. A student in Newark who needs a math tutor can get one and stay exactly where they are.
๐Ÿ’ฐ
Zero cost to New Jersey
Not a single state budget dollar is involved. Donors redirect federal taxes they already owe. NJ just has to say yes.

How It Works

Simple. Free. Permanent.

1
NJ opts in
Governor Sherrill submits NJ's election to the U.S. Treasury โ€” zero state budget impact.
2
Donors give $1,700
Individual taxpayers donate to a qualifying SGO. Dollar-for-dollar off their federal taxes owed.
3
SGO awards scholarships
Eligible NJ students receive scholarships for tutoring, books, and academic support.
4
Kids advance
Students get the tutors and materials they need โ€” in their existing public schools.

Tell Governor Sherrill:
NJ can't wait.

To Governor Mikie Sherrill:

We, the undersigned New Jersey residents, urge you to immediately issue New Jersey's intent to opt into the federal Education Freedom Tax Credit โ€” a permanent, dollar-for-dollar $1,700 federal tax credit for scholarship donations that costs our state nothing to participate in.

This program funds tutoring, textbooks, technology, and academic support for K-12 students across New Jersey โ€” including public school families who simply want more for their children without switching schools.

New York issued its formal intent to opt in on May 8, 2026. Thirty states have said yes. But January 1, 2027 is not the only deadline โ€” Scholarship Granting Organizations need time to form, certify, and mobilize before they can put a single dollar in a student's hands. Every day of delay is a day NJ's kids fall further behind. We are asking you to act now.

Led by New Jersey advocates, for New Jersey families

This campaign is organized by Jersey 1st, a New Jersey 501(c)(4) civic advocacy organization committed to expanding opportunity for all NJ families โ€” across party lines and zip codes.

Our specific focus is on the piece of the EFTC that gets overlooked: tutoring, books, and academic materials for public school students who want to advance. Not school switching. Just real support for kids who are already showing up and working hard.
